Water resources management of the southern rivers of Russia with reference to fisheries requirements

Abstract: Water consumption from Russia's southern rivers has increased substantially in recent years as a consequence of intensified economic activity. The volume of irreversible river‐flow withdrawal from the Azov Sea basin varies between 11 and 13 km3 year−1. The majority of the abstracted water is used for irrigation. By 1990, the decrease in discharge into the Caspian Sea was 41 km3 year−1. Withdrawals of water from the Kura, Terek, Ural and other rivers have so far exceeded the ecologically admissible limits and b… Show more

“…Mounting commercial pressure coincided with construction of river dams in Acipenseriformes habitat, blocking spawning ground access and altering spawning habitat, with fish passageways ineffective for mitigation and dam removal a limited option (Scarnecchia et al. 1989; NMFS 1998b; Dubina and Kozlitina 2000; Billard and Lecointre 2001; Friedl and Wüest 2002; Hart et al. 2002; Parsley et al.…”

“…The water requirements for spawning in the lower Don, and conditions for fattening and feeding of anadromous and semi‐anadromous fish in the Sea of Azov were determined by Dubinina (1969, 1978) and Dubinina & Kozlitina (1976), and were applied in the releases from the Tsimlyansk dam. Similar criteria were later developed for reproduction of anadromous and semi‐anadromous fish on the spawning grounds of the lower Kuban and its estuary lakes (Gargopa 1979; Chebanov 1989), and for the lower Volga spawning grounds (Astakhova & Katunin 1971; Pavlov, Katunin, Alyokhina, Vlasenko, Dubinina & Sidorova 1989).…”

“…So far, integrated studies of N and P pollution of the Black Sea are scarce (EEA 2005). Some studies addressed eutrophication in the Black Sea (Cociasu et al 1996;Humborg et al 1997;Dubinina and Kozlitina 2000;Lancelot et al 2002;Ragueneau et al 2002;Ludwig et al 2009). However, their focus has mainly been on the North part of the Black Sea with special attention to the Danube River.…”
