“…The decrease in WUE of B. faberi var. microphylla seedlings under water stress, contradicts the finding with some species (Hubick et al 1986;Liu et al 2005;Maggio et al 2005), and agrees with reports on crops (Zhao et al 2004;Clavel et al 2005) and on Acacia ampliceps (Akhter et al 2005). Engelbrecht et al (2005) suggested that decreased WUE in water-stressed seedlings might be related to their root systems which are not well-established to acquire water from lower soil layers.…”

“…This might be due to the recently formed leaves (Zhao et al 2004). At the same time, different organs differ in 13 C enrichment under these water regimes.…”

“…Previous studies revealed the effects of stomatal conductance, leaf nitrogen and carbon content, and the ratio of intercellular to ambient CO 2 concentration (C i / C a ) on transpiration efficiency and P/T (Maruyama et al, 1985;Dingkuhn et al, 1989;Adachi et al, 1996) and also reported a negative correlation between P/T and carbon isotope discrimination (CID) (Dingkuhn et al, 1991;Kondo et al, 2004;Impa et al, 2005). However, CID showed a poor relationship with WUE, especially in the tillering period, and Zhao et al (2004) pointed out the possibility of breakdown of relationship between WUE and P/T to explain the poor relationship. In this study, stomatal conductance had no correlation with WUE probably because the P/T and transpiration efficiency, which can be affected by stomatal conductance, were a minor component of WUE in the early growth period, and stomatal conductance was high during the early growth period.…”
