Wave-optics modeling of the optical-transport line for passive optical stochastic cooling

Abstract: a b s t r a c tOptical stochastic cooling (OSC) is expected to enable fast cooling of dense particle beams. Transition from microwave to optical frequencies enables an achievement of stochastic cooling rates which are orders of magnitude higher than ones achievable with the classical microwave based stochastic cooling systems. A subsystem critical to the OSC scheme is the focusing optics used to image radiation from the upstream ''pickup'' undulator to the downstream ''kicker'' undulator. In this paper, we pre… Show more

“…where M 5;n are elements of the 6 × 6 transfer matrix from PU to KU centers, ΔE is the kick amplitude which is determined by the undulator parameters, particle beam energy, light optics design and OA gain [13,14], while k l ≡ 2π=λ l , where λ l is the zero-angle wavelength of the undulator radiation. The path length from PU to KU through the OSC bypass will depend on the betatron and synchrotron phases and amplitudes of the particle at the PU, as well as the matrix elements M 5;n .…”

“…This estimate neglects that only a few cycles of the wave packet are in focus at a given longitudinal point in the KU and, therefore, can overestimate the longitudinal slice length by a nonnegligible amount, see[13] for details. For this reason, when considering incoherent kicks, we assume a 4 period undulator.…”
