Wavefront sensor based on the Talbot effect with the precorrected holographic grating

Abstract: A holographic wavefront sensor based on the Talbot effect is proposed. Optical wavefronts are measured by sampling the light amplitude distribution with a two-dimensional (2D) precorrected holographic grating. The factors that allow changing an angular measurement range and a spatial resolution of the sensor are discussed. A comparative analysis with the Shack-Hartmann sensor is illustrated with some experimental results.

“…The image is distorted when grating is illuminated by non-plane wavefront [26] and degree of the image distortion describes the measured wavefront. It should be noted, that the restoration procedure for Talbot sensor is identical to Shack-Hartman one [23]. However, during optical wave propagation in the measuring channel random amplitude variations arises that lead to the local image distortions and can affect on the measuring errors of optical wavefront reconstruction [8].…”

“…On the contrary, if the grating period grows, the sensor sensitivity also increases, but the measurement range decreases. This problem can be solved by applying holographic microlens arrays in the Shack-Hartmann sensor [11] and holographic gratings in the Talbot one [12]. However, this is rather a laborious procedure.…”

“…The shifts of the properly chosen parts of the image provide the data about the wavefront slopes. The wavefront reconstruction procedure is similar to that which is used with the Shack-Hartmann sensor [13,14].…”
