Weaving Together Theory, Research, Practice, and Teaching: A Four‐dimensional Approach to Negotiation and Conflict Management Work

Abstract: In this article, we suggest a new paradigm for writing on negotiation and conflict management that integrates theory, research, practice, and teaching. While there might be an implicit understanding that such integration is key to advancing the field, we make this explicit. “…This is a quantitative data set, with face validity and conveniently structured for statistical analysis. We gathered the data within the framework of theory of practice (Bourdieu, 1977), using experiences to develop theory (Broome, 2017) and integrating teaching, practice, theory, and research (Ebner & Parlamis, 2017). To reduce the risk that results might be biased by specific contextual events, data were collected between 2010 and 2018.…”

“…Examples include Thatcher and Phillips’ () issue on how parties to the same conflict or negotiation may have different, or asymmetric, perceptions of it; Kressel and Wall's () issue on the role that a mediator's tactics and behaviors have on resolving disputes; and Elliott and Kaufman's () issue on the growing use of conflict management theory and practice to address issues of the environment and sustainability. Other special issues have been broader in scope and have been opportunities for a certain kind of paper, such as the development of new theory for negotiation or conflict management problems (Cronin, ), conceptual reviews of a literature (Gross, Adair, & Neuman, ; and more recently Gross, ), or ways in which our theory and research can be more closely linked to our teaching and to practice (Ebner & Parlamis, ).…”
