Weed control efficacy of a novel herbicide, pyroxasulfone

Abstract: Pyroxasulfone is a new herbicide developed by Kumiai Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. It has been registered in several countries for use in corn, soybeans, cotton, and wheat. Growth inhibition tests, greenhouse tests, and a field trial were conducted to evaluate the herbicidal efficacy of pyroxasulfone. Pyroxasulfone exhibited an excellent herbicidal activity at lower application rates as compared to S-metolachlor and has shown sufficient residual activity. Pyroxasulfone is one effective tool for the weed manageme… Show more

“…Pyroxasulfone may be used for selective weed control in various field crops including corn (Zea mays L.), soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. ], cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.); selectivity is conferred via differential sensitivities of VLCFA elongases in tolerant and susceptible species (Tanetani et al 2009;Yamaji et al 2014). Applied pre-emergence or early-postemergence at up to 230 g a.i.…”

“…In fields of genetically modified crops, pyroxasulfone controlled weeds that were resistant to non-selective herbicides. [1][2][3][4] Pyroxasulfone has been classified in the Herbicide Resistance Action Committee Group K3, 5) and inhibits the biosynthesis of very-long-chain fatty acids in plants. 2,6) In this paper, we describe the discovery, physicochemical properties, biological activity and development status of pyroxasulfone.…”

“…1) has been reported to exhibit excellent herbicidal activity against grass weeds and small-seeded broadleaf weeds with sufficient crop safety for corn, soybeans and wheat on pre-emergence application. 1) In this paper, we describe the development of this herbicide, with a focus on structural optimization to enhance its herbicidal activities and improve its physicochemical properties.…”
