Weekly self-monitoring and treatment adjustment benefit patients with partly controlled and uncontrolled asthma: an analysis of the SMASHING study

Abstract: BackgroundInternet-based self-management has shown to improve asthma control and asthma related quality of life, but the improvements were only marginally clinically relevant for the group as a whole. We hypothesized that self-management guided by weekly monitoring of asthma control tailors pharmacological therapy to individual needs and improves asthma control for patients with partly controlled or uncontrolled asthma.MethodsIn a 1-year randomised controlled trial involving 200 adults (18-50 years) with mild … Show more

“…We have no evidence of studies with difficult to control asthmatic patients as the next therapeutic step is to introduce monitoring through an e-health system [29][30][31][32][33]. Short term outcomes in our study show a decrease of patients attending emergency room for asthma exacerbations, as well as improved adherence and treatment compliance which is leading to favourable clinical consequences trough improving respiratory function.…”

“…Asthma education has the potential to be delivered online; however, to date, most of these self-management tools have included the monitoring of symptoms and the involvement of healthcare professionals such as the patient's physician or an asthma nurse (12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20). Some of these interventions have shown improvements in asthma control (13,14,20) and lung function (20), but little change in quality of life (20) or asthma exacerbations (20).…”
