Weight, Shape, and Body Composition Changes at Menopause

Abstract: Obesity and overweight are associated with increased risks of cardiovascular and metabolic disease and overall poor health outcomes. Menopause is associated with significant changes in body composition and the accumulation of peri-abdominal or visceral fat. Changes in energy expenditure and spontaneous activity have been noted. These mid-life changes can add further to the burden of obesity and its associated risks. An understanding of the role of estrogen, gonadotrophins, gut hormones, sleep deprivation and t… Show more

“…For perimenopausal women, knee pain may be accompanied by hip pain, which is altering gait or ambulation endurance 31 . This, in turn, can decrease activity levels and result in weight gain and increased central adiposity 32 . Knee pain may be accompanied by vasomotor symptoms including hot flashes and night sweats, which are impairing sleep 33,34 .…”

“…On the other hand, physical parameters, such as middle-Age, raised HR (evident by palpitations due to increased vasomotor response to hormonal imbalance [33]), BMI (gained weight towards obesity [34]), high systolic and diastolic BP (as essential hypertension settles in the body as age advances [35]), irregular synthesis and secretion of estradiol and progesterone (which is a measure of the hypothalamus-pituitaryovarian axis [36]), TSH (often is elevated to compensate for the increased demand of thyroxin in the body [37]), HbA1c (rises as type-2 diabetes settles down in the body [38]), and cortisol (a measure of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis is often elevated due to the increment of stress [39]) have direct or indirect relationships with the perimenopause stage in the women's life.…”

“…Menopause is also associated with weight gain and worsening body composition with a shift from gynoid to android fat distribution [ 2 ]. Although the responsible mechanisms have not been completely clarified, changes in energy homeostasis due to aging; estrogen deficiency; sleep disturbances; changes in adipokines; gut hormones; and gut microbiota seem to play a role in weight gain and the worsening of body composition during menopause [ 3 ]. It has been estimated that approximately 70% of women of perimenopausal age are overweight or obese, both of which are associated with excess morbidity and mortality [ 4 ].…”
