“…The present study indicates that for elderly patients in Harrow the upper limit of normal is 33 g. Younger subjects in the district may have heavier thyroids since the size is generally said to decline after early adult life (Jaffe, 1930;Hellwig, 1935;Rice, 1938). However, this was not apparent in the large series studied by Mortensen et al (1955) and applied only to males in another survey (Mochizuki et al, 1963). The age range in our patients was too restricted to evaluate this possibility.…”

“…However, in most cases only the mean values for all ages have been compared; when age has been taken into account results are at variance. Jaffe (1930) observed that after the age of 50 the weight in men was greater than in women, whereas others (Mortensen et al, 1955;Mochizuki et al, 1963) found the reverse, although the differences were slight.…”

“…The size of the thyroid gland was estimated by palpation and classified as normal (up to 20 g), two times normal (30 g), or three times normal (45 g). 13 At six and 12 weeks post partum, the women were again examined, and blood was drawn for thyroid studies. Initially, only a serum thyroxine (T4) assay was performed.…”

“…Numerous studies report measurements of the thyroid mass obtained by autopsy (Mochizuki et al, 1963;Kereiakes et al, 1965;Kay et al, 1966;Dunning and Schwartz, 1981;Killough and Eckerman, 1986). However, most of the sets of measurements are incomplete, either because some age groups are not covered or because few measurements are available for a specific age group.…”
