To achieve an acceptable level of zonal isolation, well integrity should be guaranteed in hydrocarbon production and geological CO2 sequestration. Well pressure test can cause different types of failures in the well system leading to leakages through these failures. Laboratory evidences have revealed that occurrence of radial tensile fractures is likely during pressure tests. In this paper, we use a numerical code call MDEM which was formulated based on discrete element method. The code can model discontinuum feature of fractures. A model of a lab-sized pressure test was built and compared to an experiment previously published. The model was tested under different confinement levels and effect of the tensile strength of rock on the radial fracture was investigated at the same lab-scale. Fracture opening profiles are also presented showing the leakage potential of these fractures under different pressure level.

This paper addresses evaluating the evolution of stress inside the casing-cement sheath-formation system during the cement injection, setting, completion, and production stages of hydrocarbon recovery. This full-life-cycle analysis of cement sheath integrity gives rise to assessment of potential failure mode (i.e., tensile mode, shear mode, and microannulus) in different stages, and the prevention measures can be proposed accordingly. Considering the loading history, two regimes should be distinguished. Before the accomplishment of cementation, as the cement slurry can merely withstand its hydraulic pressure, the in situ stress and the wellbore pressure are withstood by the rock and the casing, respectively. Once the cementation process is completed, the stress increment (e.g., hydraulic fracturing pressure) is withstood by the casing-cement sheath-formation system. The autogenous shrinkage of cement adversely affects the resistance of the system to all types of failure, whereas a moderate swelling of cement is favorable to the cement sheath integrity. In addition, the cement sheath integrity is strongly influenced by the depth: the failure is encountered more easily at the shallow layer. Both the hydraulic fracturing pressure in the completion stage and the increase in casing temperature in the production stage may lead to tensile circumferential stress, and the hydraulic fracturing is the most critical stage for the integrity of cement sheath.

With the increasing demand for new technologies in HPHT (high pressure high temperature) wells, more and more attention has been paid to the system of technical qualifications. Most established norms, standards and recommended practices are written in prescribed formats, setting out methods, procedures and acceptance criteria for product design, manufacture and testing. However, established norms, standards or recommended practices may not adequately cover new technologies or applications. The technical qualification system is established in this paper, which can identify the potential failure modes and some activities in order to control the uncertainties and increase confidence of using new technology. A risk-based technical qualification system is used to assess non-traditional operations. It includes following seven main steps: system breakdown, technology assessment and classification, technical novelty, failure model and risk analysis, risk-based qualification planning and participation level development. The core of technical qualification system is to understand the ways and causes of system failure, and to carry out corresponding activities to provide evidence that the system will not fail. Through the technical identification process, the detailed equipment/operation specifications and identification requirements have been formulated. Different levels of participation are assigned for each eligibility activity, depending on the hazard and risk. It is proved that the application of the technical qualification principle in the systematic evaluation and control of the risks of new technologies or new applications is successful. In HPHT wells in particular, operators can move from a reactive approach to a proactive approach.
