Given the rise in the popularity of wearable electronics that are able to deform into desirable configurations while maintaining electrochemical functionality, stretchable and flexible (hybrid) supercapacitors (SCs) have become increasingly of interest as innovative energy storage devices. Their outstanding power density, long lifetime with low capacitance loss, and appropriate energy density, in particular in hybrid cases make them ideal candidates for flexible electronics. The aim of this review paper is to provide an in-depth discussion of these stretchable and flexible SCs ranging from fabrication to electro-mechanical properties. This review paper begins with a short overview of the fundamentals of charge storage mechanisms and different types of multivalent metal-ion hybrid SCs. The research methods leading up to the current state of these stretchable and flexible SCs are then presented. This is followed by an in-depth presentation of the challenges associated with the fabrication methods for different configurations.Proposed novel strategies to maximize the elastic and electrochemical properties of stretchable/flexible or quasi-solid-state SCs are classified and the pros and cons associated with each are shown. The advances in mechanical properties and the expected advancements for the future of these SCs are discussed in the last section.

Air Retention under Water by the Floating Fern Salvinia: The Crucial Role of a Trapped Air Layer as a Pneumatic Spring

The ability of floating ferns Salvinia to keep a permanent layer of air under water is of great interest, e.g., for drag‐reducing ship coatings. The air‐retaining hairs are superhydrophobic, but have hydrophilic tips at their ends, pinning the air–water interface. Here, experimental and theoretical approaches are used to examine the contribution of this pinning effect for air‐layer stability under pressure changes. By applying the capillary adhesion technique, the adhesion forces of individual hairs to the water surface is determined to be about 20 µN per hair. Using confocal microscopy and fluorescence labeling, it is found that the leaves maintain a stable air layer up to an underpressure of 65 mbar. Combining both results, overall pinning forces are obtained, which account for only about 1% of the total air‐retaining force. It is suggested that the restoring force of the entrapped air layer is responsible for the remaining 99%. This model of the entrapped air acting is verified as a pneumatic spring (“air‐spring”) by an experiment shortcircuiting the air layer, which results in immediate air loss. Thus, the plant enhances its air‐layer stability against pressure fluctuations by a factor of 100 by utilizing the entrapped air volume as an elastic spring.

Monolithic polymeric porous superhydrophobic material with pneumatic plastron stabilization for functionally durable drag reduction in blood-contacting biomedical applications

Superhydrophobic (SHP) surfaces can provide substantial reductions in flow drag forces and reduce blood damage in cardiovascular medical devices. However, strategies for functional durability are necessary, as many SHP surfaces have low durability under abrasion or strong fluid jetting or eventually lose their air plastron and slip-flow capabilities due to plastron gas dissolution, high fluid pressure, or fouling. Here, we present a functional material that extends the functional durability of superhydrophobic slip flow. Facile modification of a porous superhydrophobic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE, Teflon) foam produced suitable surface structures to enable fluid slip flow and resist protein fouling. Its monolithic nature offered abrasion durability, while its porosity allowed pressurized air to be supplied to resist fluid impalement and to replenish the air plastron lost to the fluid through dissolution. Active pore pressure control could resist high fluid pressures and turbulent flow conditions across a wide range of applied pressures. The pneumatically stabilized material yielded large drag reductions (up to 50%) even with protein fouling, as demonstrated from high-speed water jetting and closed loop pressure drop tests. Coupled with its high hemocompatibility and impaired protein adsorption, this easily fabricated material can be viable for incorporation into blood-contacting medical devices.
