“…Over the last 15 years a small but growing number of researchers have adopted a critical perspective in general and critical social theory 3 in particular to analyse the development and use of ICT (Howcroft and Trauth, 2004;Richardson and Robinson, 2007). Examples are CecezKecmanovic (2001;2002), Cecez-Kecmanovic and Janson (1999), Hirschheim et al (1996), Hirschheim and Klein (1994), Janson and Cecez-Kecmanovic (2005), Myers and Young (1997), Ngwenyama and Lee (1997), and Ngwenyama and Lyytinen (1997). “…Nonetheless, it is worth noticing that the use of this particular theory has been both criticized and questioned (e.g. Ljungberg and Holm, 1996;Sharrock and Button, 1997;Brooke, 2002). Ljungberg and Holm (1996) criticize how the theories of speech acts and communicative action have been used as a foundation for IT systems design.…”

“…A considerable number of theories have been used in critical research. In the field of IS, one can observe that the work of two researchers has gained prominence: Jürgen Habermas and Michel Foucault (Brooke 2002). We will outline brief aspects of their theoretical positions which allow for a wider interpretation of the role of focus group research in the context of critical social research.…”
