What Grounded Theory Is…A Critically Reflective Conversation Among Scholars

Abstract: Grounded theory (GT) is taught in many doctoral schools across the world, and exemplified in most methodological books and publications in top tier journals, as a qualitative research method. This limited view of GT does not allow full use of possible resources and restrains researchers' creativity and capabilities. Thus, it blocks some innovative possibilities and the emergence of valuable theories, which are badly needed. Therefore, understanding the full reach and scope of GT is becoming urgent and we broug… Show more

“…Various data collection methods are available in ethnography, including participant 133 observations, interviews, focus groups, audio-visual material and documents (Gobo, 2008b In GT, the researcher uses multiple stages of collecting, refining, and categorizing the data (Charmaz,159 2014). “…Moreover, it gives close-up and in-depth insights into various organizational phenomena [7,8] perspectives and motivations for actions [1,8]. However, despite the explicit attention of journal editors to what qualitative research is and how it could or should be conducted [8][9][10], it is not always transparent how particular research was actually conducted [2,11]. A typical topic of debate is what the size of a sample should be for inductive qualitative research to be credible and dependable [9,12] (Note that in this paper, I refer to qualitative research in an inductive context.…”

“…Research sites were selected to achieve a dichotic sample that provides many possibilities for comparison, which enables richer theory development (Glaser and Strauss, 1967; Strauss and Corbin, 1990; Corbin and Strauss, 2014; Walsh et al, 2015). This study intended to contrast firms that were different in terms of their variety of resource characteristics, learning mechanism, routes of choice, and that were at different interaction of firm competence.…”
