Older Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) people living in the United Kingdom (UK) are vulnerable to the experiences of social isolation and loneliness. Despite this, it is widely assumed that they adhere to traditional family practices and living arrangements that protect them from social isolation and loneliness. Such assumptions are problematic and can reify family networks as the main area of research for older BME people to the detriment of friendship networks which are also crucial. However, few researchers have explored this area. With the older BME population increasing at a faster rate than the older white population, further research is needed. Utilising data from Wave 6 of Understanding Society (N = 7,499, 4.3% of whom self-identified as BME), this study explores the ways in which the friendship networks of older BME people differ compared to older white people using logistic regression analyses. After controlling for potential confounding socio-demographic characteristics, older BME people were more likely to report having fewer close friends and fewer friends who live locally, suggesting that their friendship networks may be restricted in quantity and accessibility. Not only do these findings raise important questions about the varying needs of older minority ethnic people who have been largely overlooked in recent government policy, but they also highlight the continuing challenges of using large-scale surveys to research older BME people in the UK.

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menggambarkan hubungan teman sebaya dan permainan tradisional dengan kemampuan sosial dan emosional anak usia dini. Sampel penelitian dari 30 anak yang terdiri dari 10 laki-laki dan 20 perempuan. Sampel penelitian adalah anak-anak berusia 5-6 tahun di wilayah pesisir selatan Kulon Progo. Pengumpulan data dikumpulkan dengan wawancara, observasi, dan dokumentasi. Analisis validitas data dilakukan dengan triangulasi sumber dan teknik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa keterampilan sosial dan emosional anak usia dini di pantai selatan Kulon Progo menunjukkan tingkat pencapaian perkembangan yang cukup baik. Hubungan teman sebaya yang positif akan meningkatkan prestasi perkembangan sosial dan emosional anak-anak. Peran orang tua dan guru penting dalam perkembangan sosial anak-anak dan perlu direalisasikan dan dipelajari secara mendalam.

In this article, I explore the ways in which friendship contributes to shaping the boundaries of men's and women's sexual experiences. Using inputs from the sociology of experience and the sociology of friendship, I explore qualitative data from a research about sexuality in Portugal, in which I collected sexual biographies of 35 men and women, aged 30-55. In the in-depth interviews, these adult participants, possessing secondary and tertiary education, and living in urban areas, reflected retrospectively about their sexual biography, including their childhood and youth. The main thesis is that the practices of friendship (which structure those relationships as social facts) also help to structure sexual practices and representations and, through them, to construct the contemporary sexual self. Those practices may be discursive ('talking' and 'chatting'), or rather oriented to action ('doing things together'). In this article, I focus on discursive friendship practices, and how they contribute to shaping contemporary sexual experience. Drawing on F. Dubet's sociology of experience, I argue that this relationship is defined in the tension along three dimensions: integration, strategy and subjectivation. This process is cross-cut by gender, as discursive friendship practices interact differently with the dimensions of sexual experience, in that strategy mainly reinforces definitions and enactment of hegemonic forms of masculinity, while subjectivation helps to challenge them and to build plural gender experiences (both feminine and masculine).
