In experiments, researchers commonly allocate subjects randomly and equally to the different treatment conditions before the experiment starts. While this approach is intuitive, it means that new information gathered during the experiment is not utilized until after the experiment has ended. Based on methodological approaches from other scientific disciplines such as computer science and medicine, we suggest machine learning algorithms for subject allocation in experiments. Specifically, we discuss a Bayesian multi-armed bandit algorithm for randomized controlled trials and use Monte Carlo simulations to compare its efficiency with randomized controlled trials that have a fixed and balanced subject allocation. Our findings indicate that a randomized allocation based on Bayesian multi-armed bandits is more efficient and ethical in most settings. We develop recommendations for researchers and discuss the limitations of our approach.

Durante las últimas décadas, las universidades latinoamericanas han profundizado su integración al sistema universitario mundial, lo que ha implicado transformaciones radicales y tendencias a la complejización. El presente ensayo concibe la universidad como un sistema organizacional complejo, cuya reproducción tiene lugar mediante la toma de decisiones. Desde esta perspectiva se plantea que, ante un contexto de creciente complejidad e incertidumbre como el latinoamericano, la observación del entorno a través del análisis institucional comprende una herramienta fundamental para neutralizar potenciales procesos de desintegración que amenacen a la universidad. Se considera, en este sentido, que: (1) los modelos de gestión tradicional asumen un entorno estable en el futuro, (2) tales esquemas disminuyen la capacidad de la universidad de reaccionar a cambios externos, pudiendo, además, derivar en la rutinización del proceso de toma de decisiones, (3) ante la incertidumbre, la posibilidad de adaptarse/responder al entorno resulta fundamental para la sustentabilidad institucional, y (4) aquella capacidad solo existe si se incorpora el análisis del entorno al proceso de toma de decisiones. La argumentación se desarrolla tomando como caso de análisis el subsistema universitario chileno. Se concluye que para operar en el contexto actual, la universidad requiere transitar hacia modelos de gestión basada en evidencia, en cuanto entregan mayor capacidad para reducir la complejidad creciente del entorno general y competitivo de la universidad

Beyond time-binds: Rethinking work–family dynamics for a mobile world

Contemporary work is increasingly mobile, sparking new challenges for scholars of work and organizations. In this review article, we argue that a ‘mobilities lens’ offers strong potential for rethinking established approaches, focusing on one important sub-field: work–family studies. Drawing on a ‘problematization’ approach (Sandberg and Alvesson, 2011) and a systematic literature review (SLR) of work–family research published from 1995 to 2015, we show how theoretical assumptions about time, space, and place have narrowed the scope of work–family studies, focusing attention on ‘time’ and ‘time-binds’, and a limited subset of mobilities (e.g. telework, commuting). We argue that a mobilities lens can help us ‘think differently’ about work–family dynamics, prompting theoretical and methodological reorientations that recognize the inextricable connection of time and space (as ‘time–space’) and the need for a more encompassing excavation of the power, practice, and meaning of employment-related mobility (ERM) in work–family life. We sketch out a ‘mobilities inspired’ agenda to illustrate how ideas from mobilities studies can enrich work–family inquiry. We also discuss how mobilities studies can benefit, in turn, from greater engagement with work–family and organizational research.
