When decision support systems fail: Insights for strategic information systems from Formula 1

Abstract: Decision support systems (DSS) are sophisticated tools that increasingly take advantage of big data and are used to design and implement individual-and organization-level strategic decisions. Yet, when organizations excessively rely on their potential the outcome may be decision-making failure, particularly when such tools are applied under high pressure and turbulent conditions. Partial understanding and unidimensional interpretation can prevent learning from failure. Building on a practice perspective, we st… Show more

“…The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is used as Decision Support Systems (DSS) (Sprague & Carlson, 1982;Aversa, Cabantous, & Haefliger, 2018;Keenan & Jankowski, 2019) with its different generator systems. The Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) is a well-known multicriteria methodological approach for the decision-making process.…”

“…Nevertheless, the benefits associated with Decision Support Systems (DSS) powered by BD are not entirely foolproof. In this regard, Aversa et al (2018) believe that the characteristics of the social, physical and technical environment, the distribution of decision-making activities among individuals and corporate artefacts as well as the performativity of DSS models may also negatively influence the assumptions and methods of data-driven decision-making in organisations.…”

“…In this regard, we mention the work of Aversa, Cabantous and Haefliger (2018), in which, by means of a Formula 1 race, the authors determine that decision support system (DSS) potential failure is exacerbated under pressure and time constraints.…”
