White Organic Light-Emitting Diodes with Fluorescent Tube Efficiency

Abstract: White organic LEDs are seen as one of the next generation light-sources, with their potential to reach internal efficiencies of unity and their unique appearance as large-area and ultrathin devices. However, to replace existing lighting technologies, they have to be at least on par with the state-of-the-art. In terms of efficiency, the fluorescent tube with 60-70 lumen per Watt (lm W-1) in a fixture is the current benchmark. In the scientific literature, so far only values of 44 lm W-1 have been published for … Show more

“…The most striking success of this approach is the realization of organic field effect transistors with improved operational stability 4,7 , highly efficient organic light emitting diodes 8,9 and solar cells with improved performance 10,11 . We focus on the case of p-type doping, that is, the introduction of excess positive charge carriers (holes) in the semiconductor.…”

“…One method of enhancing the out-coupling efficiency is to use a high-refractiveindex glass substrate and a hemisphere microlens thereon [16][17][18] . Moreover, a Bragg diffraction grating (BDG), a low-index grid and an internal scattering structure of the organic layer have been introduced in these devices for the light extraction of the indium tin oxide (ITO)/organic WG mode [19][20][21][22][23][24] .…”

“…1 White OLEDs, in particular, offer great potential for energy-efficient general illumination: luminous efficacies of more than 90 lm W 21 , comparable to the best fluorescent tubes, have already been reported. 2,3 Furthermore, OLED-based light sources can be made mechanically flexible and transparent, offering new opportunities for architecture, visual art and decoration. 4 The reliable realtime tunability of the OLED emission color would impart further momentum to OLED technology on its way to becoming a widespread source of general illumination.…”
