White piedra and Trichosporon species in equatorial Africa. III. Identification of Trichosporon species by slide agglutination test

Abstract: Summary. Fifty‐two Trichosporon strains isolated from Gabonese female patients 15–60 years, were studied. The identity of these strains was established by two different methods: the method proposed by Guého et al. (1992), based on mycological criteria, and a slide agglutination method performed with monospecific antisera prepared in our laboratory. The final results show a perfect correlation between the two methods, which allowed us to identify 25 strains of T. mucoides, 21 strains of T. inkin and seven stra… Show more

“…A maioria das cepas de Trichosporon asahii podem ser confundidas com Candida spp numa cultura inicial, causando atraso no tratamento 4,6 . Curiosamente, o teste de aglutinação do látex para o antígeno do Cryptococcus neoformans pode ser positivo em pacientes infectados com Trichosporon spp 14 .…”

“…This method allowed the verification of the presence of antigens common to the genera Cryptococcus and Trichosporon. 8 One additional case of white piedra of the scalp caused by T. mucoides has been described in India. 9 Trichosporon mucoides has also been responsible for severe cases of deep infections in premature newborns, 10,11 heart, kidney, and liver transplant recipients, 12,13 patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, 14 patients on peritoneal dialysis, 15 and patients with diabetes mellitus.…”
