Whole Body MRI for Detecting Metastatic Bone Tumor: Comparison with Bone Scintigrams

Abstract: Purpose: To compare the eŠectiveness of whole body MRI (WB-MRI [magnetic resonance imaging]) and bone scintigram (BS) at detecting bone metastasis.Materials and Methods: WB-MRI was performed on 16 patients for detecting bone metastasis (6 breast carcinoma, 7 prostatic carcinoma, 1 renal cell carcinoma [RCC], 1 hepatocellular carcinoma [HCC], and 1 primary unknown). BS was also performed in all cases. Patients were placed on a table top extender (Philips Medical Systems). The maximal longitudinalˆeld of view (F… Show more

“…In the selected 11 studies, four studies conducted WB-MRI with DWI (22,27,(29)(30). The other studies conducted WB-MRI without DWI; seven studies used both histopathology and clinical follow-up as reference standards (20,22,23,25,27,(29)(30); three studies used only clinical follow-up evidence as the reference standard (24,27,28); one study used only clinical follow-up evidence as the reference standard (21). Of all 11 studies, five studies (23,(26)(27)(28)30) enrolled patients prospectively.…”

“…Five studies enrolled patients in a consecutive manner (20,23,27,29,30). For total scan time including patient positioning, six studies (20)(21)(22)(23)(24)28) were within 55 minutes, one study (27) was 75.8 minutes, and the others were not documented.…”

“…Technical improvements concerning new sequences and faster methods for localising the signal have made it possible to use MRI as a rapid imaging tool for whole-body surveys and thus to screen patients for bone metastases. The WB-MRI technique can, however, be used for detecting a variety of pathological conditions [26]. WB-MRI may allow simultaneous evaluation of soft tissues and organs, giving an overview of total tumour burden in affected patients [10].…”
