Wide Area Protection—Technology and Infrastructures

Abstract: Wide area measurements have been widely used in the energy management systems (EMS) of power systems for monitoring, operation, and control. In recent years, the advent of synchronized phasor measurements has added another dimension to the field of wide-area measurements. At the same time, the field of protection systems has been dominated by computer based relays, which make it relatively easy to communicate with relays and thus include them in many innovative protection systems. Special Protection Systems (S… Show more

“…Probably, the most well-addressed distributed control case is to apply synchronized phasors to damp the inter-area oscillations [32]. Alternatively, there are also proposals for centralized control applications based on phasor information, i.e., fast load-shedding for voltage control [33].…”

“…Wide area protection is based on a wide area measurement system (WAMS) that implements a regional protection and control system [2][3][4][5][6][7]. This was developed from special integrity protection systems (SIPS) [8] and broadened the role of traditional relay protection from a point to a surface, so that the high standards of dependability and security inherent in modern protection systems can be maintained [9]. Wide area protection responds to various system disturbances through the analysis of wide area information and the evaluation of the system states.…”
