Wind Loads of Solar Water Heaters: Wind Incidence Effect

Abstract: For applications of solar thermal energy, solar water heaters (SWHs) are becoming common. In this study, the effect of a crosswind on the aerodynamic characteristics of residential (an inclined flat plate with a horizontal cylinder) and large-scale SWHs (an inclined flat plate only) is experimentally investigated. The tests are conducted in a low speed wind tunnel and the relative wind direction with respect to the test model, , ranges from 0 to 135 deg. Measurements of the mean and fluctuating pressures are p… Show more

“…A flow expansion in the second half of the panel is also observed, particularly for β = 45°. This agrees with the results of Chou et al [12]. Suction near the front edge is mitigated for α = 30°, and there is a flatter Cp distribution.…”

“…Aly [11] also showed that discrepancies in the available wind tunnel data may be due to the characteristics of the inflow turbulence. Chou et al [12] studied the effect of wind direction, β. When β = 15 • -60 • , there is greater suction on the upper surface near the windward corner.…”

“…Cao et al [14] noted that wind-induced loads on an inclined panel are due primarily to pressure equalization at large angles of tilt and turbulence at small angles of tilt. The effect of the angle of incidence of wind, β, was investigated by Chou et al [15]. There is greater suction on the upper surface near the windward corner for β = 15 • -60 • .…”

“…Chung et al [3] conducted experimental study of a scaled commercial system to investigate the mean surface pressure distributions and uplift forces at different wind speeds resulting in the following: the wind uplift is effectively reduced with a guide plate placed normal to wind direction. Chou et al [4] investigated experimentally the effect of a crosswind on the aerodynamic characteristics of two different solar water heaters setups. The first one is a typical residential solar water heater and the second one is an inclined flat plate without the horizontal cylinder.…”
