Abstract:Energy efficiency is a fundamental requirement for a wireless protocol to be suitable for use within the Internet of Things. New technologies are emerging aiming at an energy-efficient communication. Among them, Bluetooth Low Energy is an appealing solution. Recently, the specifications of Bluetooth 5 have been presented with the purpose to offer significant enhancements compared to the earlier versions of the protocol. Bluetooth 5 comes with new communication modes that differ in range, speed, and energy consumption. This paper proposes a fuzzy-based solution to cope with the selection of the communication mode, among those introduced with Bluetooth 5, that allows the best energy efficiency. This communication mode, used by mobile devices, is dynamically regulated by varying the transmission power, returned as the output of a Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC). A Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm is presented to achieve the optimal parameters of the proposed FLC, i.e., optimizing the triangular membership functions, by varying their range, to reach the best results concerning the battery life of mobile devices. The proposed FLC is based on triangular membership functions because they represent a good trade-off between computation cost and efficiency. The paper presents a detailed description of the FLC design, a logical analysis of the PSO algorithm for the derivation of best performance conditions values, and experimental assessments, obtained through testbed scenarios.

Fifth generation (5G) is a recent wireless communication technology in mobile networks. The key parameters of 5G are enhanced coverage, ultra reliable low latency, high data rates, massive connectivity and better support to mobility. Enhanced coverage is one of the major issues in the 5G and beyond 5G networks, which will be affecting the overall system performance and end user experience. The increasing number of base stations may increase the coverage but it leads to interference between the cell edge users, which in turn impacts the coverage. Therefore, enhanced coverage is one of the future challenging issues in cellular networks. In this survey, coverage enhancement techniques are explored to improve the overall system performance, throughput, coverage capacity, spectral efficiency, outage probability, data rates, and latency. The main aim of this article is to highlight the recent developments and deployments made towards the enhanced network coverage and to discuss its future research challenges.

High-speed rail (HSR) communication has always been an attractive research topic with the continuous progress of transportation systems and communication technologies. Recently, Hyperloop has emerged as a candidate for very high-speed transportation systems. Because of its outstanding potential, Hyperloop can usher in a new transportation era with several attractive features. Developing suitable communication system solutions is crucial to bring this promising technology closer to reality. In addition, the Hyperloop communication system is essential to support monitoring-and-controlling services and deliver communication services inside its capsules/pods. Throughout this article, we overview Hyperloop technology and discuss its general characterization to recognize and estimate its relative position among the current HSR communication systems. Then, we investigate different attributes of the communication system, including network architecture, quality-of-service (QoS) requirements, and critical challenges to implement a reliable communication system. With the high speed of the capsule/pod and the system's unique structure, severe Doppler effect and frequent handover may considerably affect the operation of the communication system. Because Hyperloop is a recent development, it is necessary to study the existing HSR communication technologies to determine whether they can establish robust communication links for the Hyperloop system and deliver data with the required QoS. Furthermore, we provide technical details of the current HSR technologies and related research. Subsequently, we present the recent advances in the Hyperloop communication system with classification depending on whether it is a radio-, network-, antenna-, or software-based solution. Finally, we propose future research directions that can promote an improved communication performance.
