There are very few couple-level studies of communication and decision making regarding contraceptive use in the Middle East. In Turkey-a predominantly Muslim nation that has a secular democracy and is undergoing considerable social change-fertility has declined significantly, men play a major role in contraceptive practice and women's position in society is increasingly contested. These factors make Turkey a particularly interesting country for couplelevel studies.Traditionally, the measurement of contraceptive use has been based solely on women's self-reports of current use. Although this is methodologically convenient, the individual and subjective experiences of partners may differ. A more comprehensive measure of a couple's contraceptive use requires information from each partner. Moreover, because contraceptive practice and fertility are interrelated, the married couple is the appropriate unit of analysis, especially in societies such as those in the Middle East, where the vast majority of contraceptive use and almost all births occur within marriage.For this region, only a few fertility and family planning surveys have collected data from men or couples. The 1992 Egyptian Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) included a subsample of husbands, and the 1992 Moroccan DHS interviewed married and unmarried men aged 20-70, but we could not identify any couple-level studies using these data. The 1985 Jordan Husbands' Fertility Survey interviewed the husbands of women who were currently married when interviewed in the 1983 Jordan Fertility and Family Health Survey. Although one study presented some comparisons of spousal reports about contraceptive knowledge and family planning attitudes from these two Jordanian surveys, 1 the comparisons were purely descriptive and limited in scope, and responses for husbands and wives were from different survey years. The 1988 Turkish Population and Health Survey collected limited data from men. A comparison of spousal reports revealed a high percentage of agreement about fertility measures, but only about three-quarters of the women knew their husbands' age and level of education (72% and 78% agreement, respectively, between spouses). 2 A decade later, the 1998 Turkish DHS collected detailed couple-level data, including data on gender expectations and attitudes from each partner, which are analyzed in the current study.This study has three objectives. First, it assesses the extent of interpartner concordance on self-reported aspects of reproductive decision making and behavior. This study was conducted in order to determine the reasons why men and women choose the withdrawal method, one of the traditional methods in preventing pregnancy. The study sample was composed of married women aged 15-49 years (150) and their partners. The study was applied in the Süleymaniye Obstetrics and Gynecology Training and Research Hospital. Data required for the research was collected during three month period of time via questionnaires on women and men, and was prepared in the light of recent literature on this subject. While analyzing the data, we used percentage, average and chi-squared testing. It was discovered that women's knowledge on family planning methods was significantly higher than men's (p<0.05). We found that there was a significant difference between men and women in terms of their reasons to choose withdrawal as a birth-control (p<0.05). The rate of the men who preferred withdrawal method (33.3%) was founded to be significantly higher than women (18%) (p<0.05). Although women were significantly more conscious about family planning than men, men were the ones to decide the method to use.Keywords: Midwifery, family planning methods, traditional methods, withdrawal method Özet Bu çalışma; eşlerinin geleneksel yöntemlerden biri olan geri çekme yöntemini gebeliğin önlenmesinde tercih etme nedenlerini saptamak amacı ile gerçekleştirildi. Araştırmanın örneklemini 15-49 yaş grubu, evli kadınlar (150) ve eşleri (150) oluşturturdu. Araştırma Süleymaniye Doğum ve Kadın Hastalıkları Eğitim Araştırma Hastanesinde gerçekleştirildi. Araştırmanın verileri literatür bilgisi doğrultusunda oluşturulan kadın ve eşine ilişkin anket formları aracılığı ile toplandı. Verilerin değerlendirilmesinde, yüzdelik, ortalama ve Ki-kare önemlilik testi kullanıldı. İstatistiksel anlamlılık ise p<0.05 ile tanımlandı. Kadınların etkili aile planlaması yöntemlerini erkeklerden istatistiksel olarak anlamlı düzeyde daha fazla bildiği bulundu (p<0.05). Geri çekme yöntemlerini tercih etme nedenleri açısından eşler arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı fark olduğu saptandı (p<0.05).Geri çekme yöntemini kimin tercih ettiği sorulduğunda, erkeklerde "benim tercihim" diyenlerin oranı (%33.3) kadınlardan (%18) anlamlı olarak fazla bulundu (p<0.05). Sonuç olarak aile planlaması yöntemleri konusunda kadınların erkeklerden daha bilinçli olduğu ancak kararı erkeklerin verdiği söylenebilir.

Amaç. Bu çalışmanın amacı Yozgat il merkezinde yaşayan kadınların aile planlaması hakkındaki bilgi düzeylerini ve kullanılan doğum kontrol yöntemlerini belirlemektir. Yöntemler. Çalışma Ekim 2010-Temmuz 2011 tarihleri arasında Kadın Hastalıkları ve Doğum Polikliniğine başvuranlar arasından çalışmaya katılmayı kabul eden 441 hastaya anket yöntemi uygulanarak yapıldı. Anket formları hemşire tarafından karşılıklı görüşme ile dolduruldu. Bulgular. Çalışmaya katılan hastaların ortalama yaşı 34,27±9,3, gravidası 2,70±1,86, paritesi 2,00±1,5, düşük sayısı 0,30±1,2 ve yaşayan çocuk sayısı 2,05±1,25 olarak bulundu. Hastaların %72,4'ü kontraseptif yöntem kullanmaktaydı. En sık kullanılan kontraseptif yöntem %41 ile Rahim İçi Araç (RİA) olarak saptandı. İkinci ve üçüncü en sık kullanılan yöntemler sırasıyla geri çekme (% 23) ve kondom (%19,5) idi. Yöntem kullanmayanların oranı %27,6 idi ve bunun en sık sebebi olarak %17,7 ile çocuk sahibi olma isteği gelmekteydi. Sonuç. Çalışmamızda herhangi bir aile planlaması yöntemi kullanma oranı %72,4 olup, en fazla tercih edilen yöntem RİA'dır. Çalışmaya katılanlar arasında aile planlaması konusundaki bilgi sahibi olma düzeyi %88,2 bulunmuştur.Anahtar sözcükler: Aile planlaması, bilgi düzeyi, doğum kontrol yöntemi Abstract Aim. The aim of this study was to detect the knowledge levels and and type of contraceptive methods in women living in the center of Yozgat, a central Anatolian city. Methods. This study was done in 441 women who agreed to participate into the study attending Obstetrics and Gynecology Service between October 2010 and July 2011 by using a questionnaire application. The inquiries were filled out by a nurse with face to face conversation. Results. Of the 441 women in the study group, demographic parameters was as the following: the average age 34.27 ± 9.3 years, gravidity 2.70±1.86, parity 2.00±1.5, abortion 0.30±1.2, and number of live children 2.05±1.25. The rates of contraceptive method usage were 72.4%. The most common used contraceptive method was detected to be intrauterine device (41%). The second and third most common used methods were withdrawal (23%) and condom (19.5%), respectively. The percentage of the women who did not use any contraceptive method was 27.6% and the most common cause of this condition was child expectancy (63.9%). Conclusion. In our study, the rate of any family planning method usage is 72.4% and IUD is the most preferred method. Among the participants of the study, the level of knowledge about family planning is 88.2%.
