“…Many women who are sceptical of political structures and constitutionalism in its party political form, however, have been shown to take an active interest in nation-building (Dobrowolsky and Hart, 2003). There are also numerous examples to demonstrate that substantive representation of women in non-electoral politics can mobilise outside traditional party channels (Andrews, 2001; Furley and Katalikawe, 1997; Morgan, 1990; Reding, 1986; Selassie, 1998; Verucci, 1991), and that change often requires the mobilisation of the wider polity where governments fail to provide for specific issues or concerns. The acknowledge-ment of identity for discrete or historically marginalised groups such as women is a core principle in contemporary nation-building, and the absence from constitutional texts and structures of groups with a discrete identity can be damaging for individuals belonging to the group, facilitating stigmatisation and disenfranchisement and reducing opportunities for engaging with politics in the context of their identity (Cairns, 1999; Dobrowolsky and Devlin, 2002).…”

“…Contrasting with other non-violent Latin American transitions, like Brazil's (Verucci 1991), the Chilean process had a strong traditional flavour, meaning that some issues seen as belonging to the moral realm-among them, sexuality and marriage-were considered contentious and thus dangerous for the newly established democracy (Blofield 2001(Blofield , 2002. Thus, the transition implied compromising on the so-called 'value agenda', favouring the exclusion of value-laden topics from public discussion.…”

“…A conclusão de Madaleno é que de nada serve projetar paridades, se à esposa ou companheira continuam faltando oportunidades no mercado de trabalho 92 Verucci pergunta se o Direito estaria acompanhando a realidade social e seus novos valores e se os preconceitos tão enraizados principalmente acerca da discriminação e coisificação da mulher podem ser combatidos seriamente através da legislação. 93 Atualmente "a família não é mais apenas o reflexo da imagem de uma comunidade.…”
