Wood Adhesives and Bonding Theory

Abstract: In this last century, world had grown faster than before; now people need more furniture than in the past century. More furniture means, more particleboards and more adhesives. Wood adhesives are used in every step of furniture manufacturing. Wood adhesives aim to bond wooden materials with each other or with different materials. Today, production with a faster pace is more important. Furniture production lines could be more productive with fast curing glues. Wood adhesives are used in more than 70% of wood pr… Show more

“…Another advantage of glued structures is the utilization of substandard wood [3]. Wood gluing mainly involve organic adhesives based on polyvinyl acetate emulsions that has water resistance indicators of D2...D4 [4], as well as phenol-formaldehyde [5], acrylic [6], epoxy [7], polyurethane [8], and others.…”

“…Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) are the main compounds use in home adhesives and they are suitable for attaching to porous materials such as paper or wood [27,28]. PVA resins present a long shelf life at room temperature and produce cured films that are waterproof and mechanically resistant [29].…”

“…Rubberwood veneers peeled and recovered from short rotation Hevea plantation logs using spindleless lathe have deep lathe checks and rough surfaces, which might cause the adhesive to overpenetrate and dry out at the glueline [1]. Over-penetration of adhesive into wood results in insufficient adhesive remaining in the glueline to bridge between wood surfaces [2]. The presence of insufficient adhesive in the glueline decreased cohesion strength, resulting in a thin and starved glueline [3].…”
