Woody Polygonaceae from Brazil: new species and a new interpretation

Abstract: Woody Polygonaceae from Brazil: new species and a new interpretation John Brandbyge Brandbyge, J. 1990. Woody Polygonaceae from Brazil: new species and a new interpretation. -Nord. J. Bot. 10: 155-160. ISSN 0107-055X.Three new species, Ruprechtia maracaensis, Ruprechtia nitida, and Triplaris matogrossensis are described. Ruprechtia glauca is a poorly known species from the state of Bahia. Its relationship with R. laxiflora is discussed.

“…Triplaris Loefl. (Polygonaceae) is a myrmecophytic genus of pioneer plants comprised of 18 species of trees, distributed from Mexico to Bolivia and Brazil (Brandbyge 1986 , 1990 ). A conspicuous feature of the genus is that each plant individual harbors one ant colony in their hollow stems (Schremmer 1984 ; Sanchez 2015 ).…”

“…In this study the phylogenies of both, Triplaris and Pseudomyrmex were reconstructed using multiple gene regions as well as individuals. Twelve species of Triplaris were sampled (of the 18 described; [ 29 , 30 ]), for a total of 32 individuals. Several individuals per species were included, especially for those that have wide distribution ranges.…”

“…All species occur in lowland habitats from sea level to 2000 m in altitude and are considered important components in all stages of secondary succession [ 29 ]. The taxonomy of the genus was revised by Brandbyge [ 29 ], where he reduced the 73 taxa described to 18 species (and one subspecies; [ 29 , 30 ]), but no phylogenetic studies have addressed the interspecific relationships of Triplaris to date. A conspicuous feature of all species in Triplaris is the hollow stems that harbor ants ( Fig 1 ).…”

“…Among the genera treated by Bawa, was Triplaris Loefl. (Polygonaceae), a collection of 18 species of fast-growing trees best known for their symbiosis with ants (Brandbyge 1986, Brandbyge 1990, Burke and Sanchez 2011, Sanchez 2015. Triplaris has consistently been characterized as dioecious.…”
