Closed-Loop Modeling to Evaluate the Performance of a Scaled-Up Lithium–Sulfur Battery in Electric Vehicle Applications

A closed-loop modeling method was established here to evaluate the performance of new battery technology from lab research to scaled-up developed electric vehicle (EV) applications. As an emerging energy-storage device, the lithium–sulfur battery (LSB) is a very promising candidate for the next generation of rechargeable batteries. However, it has been difficult to commercialize the LSB up to now. In this work, we designed and built a battery, EV, and driver system loop model to study the key performance parameters of LSB operation in EVs, in which the tested data from the lab were introduced into the model followed by simulating driving cycles and fast charging. A comparison with the lithium-ion batteries used in real vehicles verified the high reliability of the model. Meanwhile, the simulation results showed that the LSB needs more improvements for EV application; in particular, developments are still highly needed to overcome the high power and energy loss and sharp voltage vibration for practical applications. The novelty of this work relies on the created closed-loop modeling method to simulate lab research results for evaluating new battery technology in scaled-up EV applications in order to not only vividly predict EV operation performance and commercialization feasibility, but also thoughtfully guide researchers and developers for further optimization and problem solutions. Therefore, this method holds great promise as a powerful tool for both lab research and the industrial development of new batteries for EV applications.

Road transport is showing growth in the period of globalization. Its task is to transport cargo as well as people to the required location within the shortest possible time and at the lowest price. Thus, road transport plays a crucial role in enabling the globalization to be developed and improved. However, the internal combustion engine hat prevail among the vehicles of freight and passenger transport are the producers of gaseous emissions from the exhaust gases. Many developed countries of the world has committed themselves, inter alia also trough the Paris Agreement, to reduce global warming, and thus to reduce the production of harmful gaseous emissions. The result is the endeavour to replace the internal combustion engine vehicles that burn carbon fuels with the vehicles powered by electric motors consuming electric energy. The reason of such trying claims that road transport using the internal combustion engine vehicles is environmentally aggressive, and the problem would not be solved by implementation of the vehicles with electric motors. Such claim is based on the fact that an electric car does not produce any of primary emissions. From an overall perspective, it is also necessary to take into account secondary emissions that are produced during the electric energy production by which is the vehicle with electric motor powered. The purpose of this article is to assume the possibility of reducing global pollution by replacing the internal combustion engine vehicles with the vehicles powered by electric motors in dependence with producing the emissions during the production of electric energy.

The use of biodiesel and diesel blends in cycle test  Fuel properties of the blends of Canola Biodiesel and Diesel  Legal exhaust emissions of the blends of Biodiesel and Diesel Figure A. Chassis dynamometer measurement systemPurpose: Alternative fuels are convenient substitutes to conventional fuels in the automotive industry which reduces emission based air pollution and dependency on use of conventional fuels. Owing to the stringent emission regulations introduced by the European Union (EU), the use of biodiesels, an alternative fuel, has become quite popular over the last decade. In this study, a two-phase experimental analyses were carried out to investigate the effects of biodiesel produced from canola oil (BD-CO) on emission and performance of diesel engines. In the first part, EURO-5 compliant diesel passenger car was tested under NEDC to investigate the effects of biodiesel on vehicle emissions and performance. In the second part, in order to examine the effect of biodiesel on combustion parameters, it was tested in engine partial and full load working conditions. Theory and Methods:The NEDC testing was conducted with diesel and four different biodiesel blends of diesel to investigate emissions of each phases of the NEDC. Experiments started with the NEDC testing. First, to drain fuel tank, vehicle was driven in the chassis dynamometer until the all fuel was depleted. Afterwards, vehicle was refueled with three liters of prepared test fuel. Cycle test was performed according to the UNECE R83. To eliminate the uncertainties resulting from ambient conditions and measurement devices, three sets of NEDC tests were performed for each fuel. Besides, in the second part steady state experiments were conducted at partial and full load working conditions of the engine. To achieve the same test conditions before taking the measurements, the engine was run for 15 minutes at 50 km/h in the 2 nd gear of the vehicle to achieve engine coolant and exhaust temperature of 90°C and 200°C respectively. The emissions, power and in-cylinder pressure values were measured during the experiments. Results:Mixing the 10% biodiesel to the diesel has reduced the ignition delay by 2 crank angles and combustion has started 2 crank angles earlier compared to pure diesel. The 10% biodiesel additive improved HC, CO and soot emissions by 15%, but caused a 2% increase in fuel consumption due to its low calorific value. In addition, NOx emissions increased by 4% with the blended biodiesel. Conclusion:The use of biodiesel should be encouraged to reduce toxic emissions and dependency to fossil fuels. CO, HC and PN emissions can be reduced with the use of biodiesel and exhaust aftertreatment equipment can be smaller and less expensive compared to usage of pure diesel.
