Abstract: Her research has primarily focused on career paths and family life in the artistic field, as well as social recognition in low-status occupations. In her current book she analyses how family processes, both regarding parenting and loss of relatives, affect artistic work, self-realization and faith in future possibilities.

“…However, in Swedish ballet, almost 70 per cent of choreographers in key positions in networks are women (Konstnärsnamnden, 2016). Further, the number of lower‐middle‐class dancers and choreographers in Sweden increased from 841 in 2007 to 1032 in 2014 (Flisbäck, 2014; Konstnärsnamnden, 2016). This implies broadening of the ‘culture of invitations’ to other social groups: ‘We have one member whose mother works at the opera, so she helped us sew some costumes [..] my boyfriend is a photographer, so we've collected favors here and there’.…”

“…For example, being paid less and having fewer professional opportunities makes sustaining an artistic career considerably more difficult for women. Juggling caregiving and parenting obligations has also been found to diminish female artists' capacity to engage in creative practice, maintain careers, and cultivate a secure sense of themselves as creators (Flisb€ ack & Lindstr€ om, 2013;Liss, 2009). Hence, creative women are often placed in the invidious position of having to choose between work and family (Bender, Nibbelink, Towner-Thyrum, & Vredenburg, 2013;Helson, 1999).…”
