Work Stress and Depressive Symptoms in Fishermen With a Smoking Habit: A Mediator Role of Nicotine Dependence and Possible Moderator Role of Expressive Suppression and Cognitive Reappraisal

Abstract: This study examined pathways of influence between work stress, depressive symptoms, nicotine dependence, expressive suppression, and cognitive reappraisal in fishermen with smoking habits in Qionghai, Hainan province, China (N = 1068). These fishermen responded to multiple assessments a week before leaving on a deep-sea fishing trip, including a Mental Stressor Investigation Questionnaire (MSIQ), the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), the Russell Reason for Smoking Questionnaire (RRSQ… Show more

“…acquisition-related noise and additional subject motion. While in general ICA-FIX can yield mixed results [59], the ICA-FIX version trained on HPC data has been seen to guarantee an accuracy (sensitivity and specificity) of around 99% [57,58,60]. Also, using a data-driven approach (as opposed to regression of nuisance covariates approach, e.g.…”

“…While the prevalence of depressive symptoms among divers (9%) was similar to the prevalence of suspected depression among Chilean men (10%), the prevalence among fishermen was higher (24%) [ 49 ]. Depression and mental health problems are a common issue among farmers [ 50 , 51 ] and fishermen [ 52 , 53 , 54 ] in rural communities worldwide. “Contextual community factors” such as employment [ 51 , 52 ], environmental factors (e.g., climate), and poor access to mental health services are involved [ 51 ].…”
