Workplace Mental State Monitoring during VR-Based Training for Offshore Environment

Abstract: Adults are constantly exposed to stressful conditions at their workplace, and this can lead to decreased job performance followed by detrimental clinical health problems. Advancement of sensor technologies has allowed the electroencephalography (EEG) devices to be portable and used in real-time to monitor mental health. However, real-time monitoring is not often practical in workplace environments with complex operations such as kindergarten, firefighting and offshore facilities. Integrating the EEG with virtu… Show more

“…Increasing energy in the theta band of frontal areas is a marker for anxiety and situations requiring cognitive control [42]. Increasing beta-band energy responds to higher arousal and is associated with the increasing emotional intensity of alertness [43], attention [44,45], stress, anxiety, and agitation [46]. Changes in beta activity in the sensorimotor cortex are associated with sensorimotor control and peripheral muscle activity [47].…”

“…Work stress is a state of tension caused by personal responses that impact the individual's emotions, bodily functions, and cognitive abilities (Abu Hasan et al, 2021; Journal of Management and Digital Business, 4(1), 2024, 70 Pan & Tian, 2020). When a person experiences physical and psychological tension that hurts emotions, cognitive function, and overall health due to their work environment, it is called work stress.…”

“…VR technology has long been used in the medical field for therapies [ 69 , 70 , 71 ]. In addition to its flexibility in design and immersive characteristics, the technology has also been recently integrated with physiological monitoring devices to monitor performances of users during the immersive experience [ 72 , 73 , 74 ]. The approach of an integrated EEG-VR system for a resilience-building intervention can also address the need for multi-centre interventions, as both systems have the advantages of portability and low setup cost.…”
