Wound healing in animals: a review of physiology and clinical evaluation

Abstract: Wound healing is a complicated process consisting of overlapping phases directed and regulated by many mediators of healing produced locally at the wound. The end goal of wound healing is the production of tissue at the site of injury which has a similar structure and provides protection to the body. Any alterations in the normal healing process can lead to delayed healing or additional tissue damage. Factors that contribute to aberrant wound healing can be species‐specific and include both intrinsic (systemic… Show more

“…Wound healing is a complicated process and paws are considered to have an increased risk for microbial contamination during healing as they are both difficult to protect and clean. 5 Manuka honey has antimicrobial activity and chemical properties that enhance wound healing and tissue regeneration. 6,7 A longer healing period was not noted in the cases showing presence of micro-organisms on culture compared to the other cases in this study.…”

“…During this stage, all the cellular processes activated post-injury wind down and come to an end, the new epithelium is formed, and the final scar tissue develops. The granulation tissue formation ceases via cellular apoptosis, leading to an acellular and avascular mature wound [57]. Majority of the cellular components exit from the wound site or undergo apoptosis, and the resulting mass consists of collagen and other ECM proteins.…”

“…Severe tissue trauma and presence of wound contamination leading to infection are common causes of delayed healing and failed wound closure, and strategies for their management are discussed in detail in this article. A review of the physiology of wound healing has been published recently 3 …”
