X-rated material and perpetration of sexually aggressive behavior among children and adolescents: is there a link?

Abstract: Longitudinal linkages between intentional exposure to x-rated material and sexually aggressive behavior were examined among youth 10-15 year olds surveyed nationally in the United States. At Wave 1 in 2006, participants (n = 1,588) were queried about these exposures and outcomes in the preceding 12 months. Wave 2 data (n = 1,206) were collected approximately 12 months after Wave 1 and Wave 3 data (n = 1,159) were collected approximately 24 months after Wave 1. Thus, data for this project represent a 36-month t… Show more

“…There is some evidence that juveniles' sexual attitudes and behaviors may be influenced to a higher degree by Internet content than by other sources (Lo & Wei, 2005). In 10-15year old children, besides exposure to Internet pornography, the potential for sexual harassment via the Internet and text messaging was found to be related to current and later aggressive sexual behavior (Ybarra, Mitchell, Hamburger, Diener-West, & Leaf, 2011). Our findings support the importance of non-contact sexual victimization as an additional risk factor for coercive sexual behaviors in adolescents.…”

“…For example, one of one of our participants saw "a woman having sex with a horse" and another saw "a woman being offended by a man and used as an object", what made her "regret having seen it". Furthermore, boys remember being repeatedly exposed to pictures of sexual activity involving bondage, domination, pain or humiliation (three times average), what raises concerns about observed links between intentional exposure to x-rated violent material and perpetration of sexually aggressive behaviour among minors (Ybarra, Mitchell, Hamburger, Diener-West, & Leaf, 2011).…”

“…No specific sexual abuse syndrome has yet been confirmed (Paolucci, Genius & Violato, 2001). Results of earlier research all point to the importance of context in assessing the nature of sexual behaviour in children (Friedrich & Lane, 2002;Ybarra, Mitchell, Hamburger, Diener-West & Leaf, 2010).…”
