X‐Ray and Electron Diffraction Study of Poly(p‐dioxanone)

Abstract: Summary: Solution‐grown lamellar crystals of poly(p‐dioxanone) (PPDX) have been crystallized isothermally from butane‐1,4‐diol at 100 °C. The crystal structure of PPDX has been determined by interpretation of X‐ray fiber diagrams of PPDX fibers and electron diffraction diagrams of lozenge‐shaped chain‐folder lamellar crystals. The unit cell of PPDX is orthorhombic with space group P212121 and parameters: a = 0.970 nm, b = 0.742 nm, and c (chain axis) = 0.682 nm. There are two chains per unit cell, which exist … Show more

“…The corresponding d spacings calculated from the Bragg equation are about 4.00 ( d 210 ), 3.71( d 020 ), and 3.06 ( d 310 ) Å, respectively. These values are in agreement with those reported about PPDO by Furuhashi et al . and Ooi and Cameron, and have no change with the addition of PDO.…”

“…Figure 2 also gives the information of crystal structure in PPDO matrix, it clearly shows that various PPDO/OVMT nanocomposites have the same characteristic diffraction peaks at 2 θ = 21.9, 23.7, and 29.3° as pure PPDO does,15 which attribute to the reflection of (210), (020), and (310), respectively. The results suggest that there is no significant effect of the OVMT on the crystal structure of the matrix of PPDO, the same phenomena also were found in the PPDO/MMT nanocomposites.…”

“…PPDO also exhibits good mechanical performance with high tensile strength and excellent flexibility, which make it a good candidate for universal uses, such as films, molded products, laminates, foams, non‐woven materials, and adhesives. Accordingly, PPDO has attracted the interest of researchers on its synthesis,5–11 properties,12–20 and applications21, 22 in recent years. However, PPDO has no distinct advantage on mechanical strength while it compares with commercialized aliphatic polyester polylactide (PLA).…”

“…The effect of clay incorporation on the crystal structure of PPDO in the nanocomposites was studied by XRD. Figure 4 illustrates the XRD patterns of neat PPDO and its nanocomposites, which were crystallized at 70°C for 24 h. As shown in Figure 4, all nanocomposites samples show three main characteristic diffraction peaks at 2θ = 21.9°, 23.7°, 29.3° as neat PPDO does,32 which are attributed to the reflection of (210), (020), and (310), respectively. In addition, it also should be noticed that the intensities of the diffraction peaks of PPDO were reinforced when the loading of HNTs and OAT was below 5 wt %, and reduced gradually when HNTs content reach or beyond 5 wt %.…”
