Xanthones and Cancer: from Natural Sources to Mechanisms of Action

Abstract: Xanthones are a class of heterocyclic natural products that have been widely studied for their pharmacological potential. In fact, they have been serving as scaffolds for the design of derivatives focusing on drug development. One of the main study targets of xanthones is their anticancer activity. Several compounds belonging to this class have already demonstrated cytotoxic and antitumor effects, making it a promising group for further exploration. This review therefore focuses on recently published studies, … Show more

“…Antitumoral activities of MLs extract are mainly attributed to the primary bioactive xanthone glucoside, mangiferin. These compounds are demonstrated to suppress several cancers by impeding their invasion, migration, and proliferation [36]. Mangiferin is found to overturn the transition from epithelial-to-mesenchymal in MCF7 breast cancer cell lines by inhibiting Wnt/β-catenin pathway and by downregulating the expression of specific enzymes (5 Nucleotidase, γ-GT, and aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase) in lung cancer bearing albino mice [37,38].…”

“…Many active compounds have been isolated from it which include xanthones (muchimangins), benzyl benzoates, methyl-salicylate, triterpene saponins, and bisdesmosidic saponins. Xanthones from S. longepedunculata have been reported for their cytotoxic and antitumor activities [ 12 16 ].…”

“…Cytotoxic activity and induction of active cell death is a common effect of plant-derived xanthones [ 13 ]. The best studied compound in this category is α-mangostin, that has been shown to induce cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in several malignant cell lines [ 10 , 14 , 15 ].…”
