XML-based approaches for the integration of heterogeneous bio-molecular data

Abstract: BackgroundThe today's public database infrastructure spans a very large collection of heterogeneous biological data, opening new opportunities for molecular biology, bio-medical and bioinformatics research, but raising also new problems for their integration and computational processing.ResultsIn this paper we survey the most interesting and novel approaches for the representation, integration and management of different kinds of biological data by exploiting XML and the related recommendations and approaches.… Show more

“…The fact that Q2 includes measures of scan quality is potentially just as important for clinicians as for the decision support system, analogous to the way image quality measures are useful in image databases for teaching (22). For exchanging data between databases, we use XML, a text-based format developed to facilitate data interchange between applications (23). …”

“…Other methods differentially weight each data source using techniques ranging from Gaussian random fields [ 46 ] to the naive-Bayes integration [ 157 ] and constrained linear regression [ 14 ], or by merging data taking into account the GO hierarchy [ 158 ], or by applying XML-based techniques [ 159 ].…”

“…The weakness in [32] is addressed in [33] to incorporate support of enumerations, list and union type constructors, with a proprietary approach. In [34], a platform independent logical schema is used to provide direct mapping using a UML profile. The coverage of XML Schema concepts is broad, but several mappings do not conform to UML.…”
