Yarrow supercritical extract exerts antitumoral properties by targeting lipid metabolism in pancreatic cancer

Abstract: Metabolic reprogramming is considered a hallmark of cancer. Currently, the altered lipid metabolism in cancer is a topic of interest due to the prominent role of lipids regulating the progression of various types of tumors. Lipids and lipid-derived molecules have been shown to activate growth regulatory pathways and to promote malignancy in pancreatic cancer. In a previous work, we have described the antitumoral properties of Yarrow (Achillea Millefolium) CO2 supercritical extract (Yarrow SFE) in pancreatic ca… Show more

“…As Yarrow SFE diminishes the expression of SREBF1 in pancreatic cancer cells and in a xenograph mouse model [16], we wanted to analyze the impact of Yarrow SFE in C57/Bl6 mice under standard diet (SD) or high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity.…”

“…In a previous work, we have demonstrated that Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) supercritical fluid extract (Yarrow SFE) downregulates the expression of the lipogenic genes SREBF1, FASN, and SCD1 in a pancreatic cancer model [16]. Herein, with obesity and diabetes being considered risk factors in cancer [17], we aimed to investigate whether Yarrow SFE could restore the lipid and/or glucose homeostasis after a high-fat diet induced obesity.…”

“…For example, in breast cancer cells, the enhanced expression of ACLY was related to the upregulation of snail proteins, which triggered tumorigenesis and enhanced cancer stemness ( Hanai et al, 2013 ). These upregulated key enzymes could promote tumor growth in many cancer types, such as breast, prostate and non-small cell lung cancer ( Al-Bahlani et al, 2017 ; Lee et al, 2017 ; Singh et al, 2018 ; Mouhid et al, 2019 ; Lounis et al, 2020 ; Yang D. et al, 2020 ; Simeone et al, 2021 ). In the meantime, studies have proved that drugs that inhibited the expression of these key enzymes, such as resveratrol and bakuchiol, could restrain the stemness of CSCs and achieve a certain curative effect ( Table 1 ; Figure 2 ).…”

“…Additionally, another member of genus Achillea, A. falcata, extract had an antiproliferative effect, and this extract induced cellular apoptosis and formation of apoptotic bodies in HeLa cell line (7). For instance, Lamia et al have demonstrated that yarrow's essential oil plays a role as a complementary adjuvant in pancreatic cancer (8).…”
