Yoga Practitioners Exhibit Higher Parasympathetic Activity and Baroreflex Sensitivity and Better Adaptability to 40 mm Hg Lower-Body Negative Pressure

Abstract: Yoga has been shown to improve autonomic conditioning in humans, as evidenced by the enhancement of parasym-pathetic activity and baroreflex sensitivity. Therefore, we hypothesized that the experience of yoga may result in adaptation to acute hemodynamic changes. To decipher the long-term effects of yoga on cardiovascular variability, yoga practitioners were compared to yoga-naïve subjects during exposure to –40 mm Hg lower-body negative pressure (LBNP). A comparative study was conducted on 40 yoganaïve subjec… Show more

“…BPV could be reduced also through corrections of lifestyle factors, like heavy alcohol use, or of clinical conditions, like obstructive sleep apnoea [169,170], or by implementing regular physical exercise or meditation [171,172,173]. Table S3, Supplemental Digital Content, http://links.lww.com/HJH/C121 provides a list of studies investigating the effects on BPV by different drugs.…”

“…Typically, yoga practitioners have been compared to nonpractitioners in the parasympathetic activity studies. In one study, for example, 40 yoga practitioners were compared with 40 nonpractitioners [56]. The practitioners were noted to have lower heart rate and greater heart rate variability in a supine resting position.…”

“…Yogic mechanisms include improvement in sympathovagal balance, optimized sleep and cognition, improved psycho-neuro-immune axis and decreased systemic inflammation, improved immune function, reduced cellular aging, impacting telomere length, enhancing neuroplasticity, and decreasing levels of stress.
