You're changed if you do and changed if you don't: Mechanisms underlying paradoxical interventions.

Abstract: We examined 2 mechanisms of change under paradoxical interventions: reactance and increased sense of self-efficacy. Procrastinating college students were randomly assigned to either paradoxical or self-control interventions. Effective study time and perceived self-efficacy were measured before and after treatment. In Study 1 nonverbal measure of initial reactance was employed. In Study 2 reactance was experimentally manipulated. Under paradoxical interventions, Ss higher on initial reactance benefited more fro… Show more

“…The several specific measures that have been used to study resistance are of two types: measures of in-session states of resistance and measures of dispositional resistant traits. Shoham-Salomon, Avner, and Neeman (1989) used audio recordings of voice qualities taking place within an interpersonal interaction, such as psychotherapy, to predict subsequent client resistance and reactance. This procedure involves filtering out speech bands of sound so that only vocal and tonal qualities of speech remain.…”

“…By delaying work and starting it on one's own schedule, one also reasserts one's autonomy. The possibility of this etiology has led to the development of paradoxical treatments; for example, people are directed to procrastinate, and when they rebel against this directive, they start work early (e.g., Mulry, Fleming, & Gottschalk, 1994;Shoham-Salomon, Avner, & Neeman, 1989).…”

“…If maladaptive CAS configurations deplete mental resources, procrastinators will be less able to complete tasks. Furthermore, some studies have reported a degree of success in reducing procrastination using paradoxical techniques where participants were 'allowed' to procrastinate (e.g., Shoham-Salomon, Avner, & Neeman, 1989). Such an intervention may indirectly challenge NMP and reduce the activation of problematic CAS configurations.…”
