“…These results are consistent with those reported from previous studies. A similar finding that persimmon tannin induced a significant decrease in intracellular ATP concentration of S. aureus has been reported by Liu et al [11]. Shi et al [12] exhibited that the addition of ferulic acid leads to a significant decline of the intracellular ATP concentration of Cronobacter sakazakii cells.…”

“…Persimmons could have other roles such as in the preservation of food, as demonstrated for persimmon tannins that exhibited antimicrobial action counter to foodborne methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and may well be developed in theory as a replacement or supplement to manage the propagation and infection of MRSA in foods [ 208 ].…”

“…Persimmon tannins from young astringent persimmon fruits actively inhibited several MRSA isolated from retail pork where the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were 1000 μg/mL. Adding persimmon tannins caused bacterial membrane integrity decrease, serious cell wall and membrane damage, which led to membrane hyperpolarization, a reduction in intracellular ATP concentration, whole cell protein and cycle depression, not to mention the morphological modifications [ 208 ]. The results presented by Liu and colleagues suggested that persimmon tannins from astringent young fruit can be used in the food and medical industries to inhibit the growth of MRSA.…”

“…researchers are therefore investigating natural broad-spectrum antibacterial agents that may be used to reduce the problem of drug resistance (8)(9)(10). Plant-derived compounds, including tannins, flavonoids, alkaloids and peptides have been reported to exhibit therapeutic action against bacterial infection (11)(12)(13), indicating their utility as antibacterial substances. antibacterial drugs are classified according to four mechanism of action: i) interference with cell wall synthesis; ii) causing damage to the plasma membrane; iii) inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis; and iv) affecting nucleic acid metabolism.…”
