Young People’s Involvement in Research

Abstract: Working with young people on research projects means we need to consider many elements of research methodology and approach. This article draws on the experience of the author and other writers to consider how young people’s involvement in research challenges current practice and influences research and researchers. It explores critically why so little has actually changed and seeks to identify future changes that need to happen, raising some important questions about the nature of research — its purpose and i… Show more

“…As the awareness of researching 'with' rather than 'on' young people has developed, a growing number of studies have included young people's input into each step of the research process, including protocol development (see, for example, Sanders & Munford 2005;Nairn et al 2007;Woodman & Tyler 2007; Ministry of Social Development 2009). However, conducting this type of research is not without its challenges (Smith et al 2002;Higgins et al 2007;Fleming 2010) and the topics of research with teenagers tend not to focus on their relationship to their families (Turtianen et al 2007). …”

“…Some of this work is rooted in the field of childhood sociology (Sommer, Pramling, & Hundeide, 2010) while substantial literature is located in the broad field of educational studies. Most studies draw on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) in order to explain their uses of PRM (Finlay, Sheridan, & Soltysek, 2013;Fleming, 2010;Holland et al, 2010;Petrie et al, 2006). The convention prompts researchers to reflect on ways to respect and involve young people in research, and to consider them as contributing subjects rather than merely objects of observation.…”
