Abstract: The photograph printed on the cover of this book shows a group of eight young men talking, laughing, smoking and posing for the camera. The black and white picture, titled Tsotsis Sophiatown ('tsotsis' denotes 'Black gangsters' and Sophiatown is a township in Johannesburg, South Africa), has a historic feel to it, and judging from the clothes the young men wear I would assume that it was taken in the 1950s or 1960s.
