Youth Motorcycle-Related Hospitalizations and Traumatic Brain Injuries in the United States in 2006

Abstract: WHAT'S KNOWN ON THIS SUBJECT:Youth motorcycle traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the few areas in which rates of hospitalized TBI among children have been increasing rapidly, and we need a better understanding of the national burden. WHAT THIS STUDY ADDS:Our findings describe the burden of motorcycle-related injuries and TBIs in both traffic and non-traffic domains and describe the TBI burden on the basis of a very large sample, with the most-precise national estimates ever reported. abstract OBJECTIVES:Th… Show more

“…Similar to findings have been reported by other studies (Fitzharris et al, 2009;Jain et al, 2009;Nunn, 2011;Talving et al, 2010;Weiss et al, 2010). In terms of age, individuals in the third decade were among the most affected, which corroborates other findings (Mallikarjuna & Krishnappa, 2009;Weiss et al, 2010;Hashim & Iqbal, 2011).…”

“…In recent years, there has been a growing concern with the significant increase of individuals injured as a result of accidents involving motorcycles in a number of countries (Naci et al, 2009) Despite the use of motorcycles as a major means of transport in some countries (Fitzharris et al, 2009;Haquea et al, 2009;Oluwadiyaa et al, 2009), or even as an instrument of leisure in others (Bevan et al, 2008;Jamaa et al, 2011;Mikocka-Walus et al, 2010;Weiss et al, 2010), these vehicles constitute a means of transport considered very risky (Nunn, 2011). This is because they do not have safety devices to the entire body or protection structure for drivers and passengers (Albalate & Fernàndez-Villadangos, 2010).…”

“…The annual incidence of TBI is estimated at over 1.5 million people in the United States alone, with many cases of mild TBI likely to be unreported. For example, data about serious motorcyclerelated TBIs in young adults reveal that patients with TBI were 3.6 times more likely to be discharged to a rehabilitation facility and more than 10 times more likely to die in-hospital compared with patients without TBI (1). However, the therapeutic and clinical management of TBI has remained elusive (2,3).…”

“…In this study, the mean LOS and mean hospital charges were higher by 2 days and $21 000, respectively, for hospitalized youth with a TBI than for youth without a TBI. 21 An examination of level I and level II trauma center data from Illinois noted that motorcyclists with a TBI had higher hospital charges and used disproportionate numbers of ICU days in comparison with motorcyclists without a TBI. 22 Copyright © 2015 Wolters Kluwer Health, Inc.…”
