“…They are bred and propagated according to a strictly defined protocol, under aseptic conditions on special sterile substrates, and the eggs are sterilised three times with 0.25% chloramine. 8,10,15 MDT is a recommended form of cleaning wounds in the situation where the surgical cleaning of necrotic tissue cannot be used. The cleansing of wounds with the use of L sericata larvae is particularly recommended in situations where necrosis has penetrated deep into the tissue, which cannot be removed mechanically using a traditional technique.…”

“…Besides the efficient removal of necrotic tissue and the acceleration of wound healing, the benefits of maggot debridement therapy (MDT) include wound disinfection. 9,10 A variety of growth factors and antimicrobial peptides delivered by the larvae in maggot excretions to the wound environment have been already reported in the literature with the aim of enhancing wound healing. 11,12 The study aim was to evaluate changes in the microflora in patients treated with L sericata larvae due to leg ulcers and diabetic foot.…”

“…Appropriate treatment of the injury translates into therapeutic success, but so far ideal dressings for burn wounds have not been developed and implemented on a large scale that would allow their complete self-healing without constant control and care. Currently, there are several hydrogels, hydrocolloid, and hydro fiber dressings available on the market [4,5]. Despite many preventive measures, various types of complications may arise during the therapeutic process.…”

“…The use of negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is effective in shrinking the wound, reducing exudate and bacteria, and stimulating neoangigenesis, specialized dressings, in the case of superficial and penetrative lesions that do not qualify for surgery [41,42,43]. There are clinical situations, especially in terminally ill patients, in which wounds debrided from necrotic tissue are only managed with dressings, due to the patient’s condition and poor prognosis [22].…”

“…The growing demand for related products results in the decreased overall cost of treatment with the use of larvae, as well as the greater practicality of MDT compared to other methods, which can be observed in recent decades, in other countries as well as in Poland [5]. For example, 100 larvae purchased from a free-range colony are sufficient to debride a wound that is 10–50 cm 2 in size, with 5–10 larvae used per 1 cm 2 , which accounts for a cost of 120–200 PLN (26–44 EUR), depending on the producer (Biolab® or Biomantis®) [22]. Considering the cost of the sample therapy with 100 loose larvae, it is cost-effective for the patient from both an economic and a medical perspective.…”
