ZBTB20 in Nociceptive Neurons of the Trigeminal Ganglia Regulates Pruritus

Abstract: Recent studies have shown that ZBTB20, a zinc-finger protein containing transcription factor, is highly expressed in small-diameter primary sensory neurons in mice, and modulates pain through regulating TRP channels. However, whether ZBTB20 regulates itch sensation has not been demonstrated. In this study, small-diameter primary sensory neuron-specific ZBTB20 knockout (PN-ZB20KO) mice were used to investigate the role of ZBTB20 in the regulation of itch sensation. First, both histamine-dependent and non-histam… Show more

“…Behavioral tests of acute itch were performed as in previous studies. 28 , 29 Three days before the behavioral test, mice were shaved on the cheek. They were placed into small transparent plastic chambers (18 × 14 × 12 cm 3 ) for routine training (three consecutive days; 30 min per day).…”

“…Zbtb20 has been shown to be present in GFAP+, S100β+, or Aldh1L1-GFP+ astrocytes in the forebrain and hippocampus, as well as in the gray and white matter of the spinal cord in rodents [ 11 , 285 ]. Other areas of the CNS containing Zbtb20+ cells include the postnatal olfactory bulb (in astrocytes and glomerular interneurons) [ 283 ], the hypothalamus (in neurons of the suprachiasmatic nucleus) [ 286 ], the cerebellum (in immature and migrating granule neurons) [ 281 , 287 ], and in the peripheral nervous system; ZBTB20 is found in developing dorsal root ganglia and mature sensory bipolar neurons [ 280 , 288 , 289 ], as well as in the subventricular zone of the telencephalon [ 283 ].…”
