Zein-Alginate-Phosphatidylcholine Nanocomplex Efficiently Delivers Lycopene and Lutein over Dietary-Derived Carotenoid Mixed Micelles in Caco-2 Cells

Abstract: This study evaluated the potency of zein-alginate-phosphatidylcholine nanoparticles (NPs) on bioaccessibility/intestinal uptake of encapsulated lycopene (LY) and lutein (LT) versus dietary absorption using simulated digestion and human intestinal Caco-2 cells. LY-zein-alginate-PC (LYZAP) and LT-zein-alginate-PC (LTZAP) NPs yield desired properties, which exhibit sustained release and are suitable for oral administration. Interestingly, co-treatment of LYZAP + LTZAP showed better release of carotenoids instead … Show more

“…Absorption interference may occur in vitro or in vivo when any two carotenoids from β-carotene, lycopene and lutein are supplemented together. 30 Previous studies have found that the absorption of lipophilic compounds can be affected by the competition for protein binding and absorption in the apical compartments of the Caco-2 cell monolayer, 31 as well as the interactions with lipophilic transporters or cell membrane lipids. 32 Similarly, it can be speculated that γ-oryzanol may compete with α-tocopherol for related transporters and result in a decrease of cellular uptake of α-tocopherol when the concentrations of binary mixture increase constantly.…”
