Zika virus outbreak in 19 English- and Dutch-speaking Caribbean countries and territories, 2015–2016

Abstract: Surveillance for Zika virus was enhanced in the English- and Dutch-speaking Caribbean following emergence of the virus in Brazil in May 2015. The first autochthonous case of Zika in the Caribbean was reported by Suriname in November 2015, and the virus subsequently spread rapidly throughout the region. Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) member states (CMS) reported clinically suspected cases of Zika and submitted serum specimens to the agency for laboratory investigation. A patient was considered a confir… Show more

“…Seroprevalence studies indicate that another catastrophic Zika epidemic is unlikely in LAC in the near term (Netto et al., 2017; Zambrana et al., 2018), but much less is known about ZIKV susceptibility in African, Asian, and Pacific Islander populations. Similarly, microcephaly rates in response to ZIKV infection varied even within the Americas, with the highest rates in Brazil (Johansson et al., 2016) and lower rates in the Caribbean (Francis et al., 2018), suggesting significant variation exists across human populations in the severity of symptoms associated with ZIKV infection. Given the potential for explosive outbreaks in naïve populations (as happened in the Americas), this is a top priority for predicting the potential for future outbreaks.…”

“…In addition to that, a rapid public health response can also be attributed to CARPHA’s headquarters location, which is situated in T&T. As Interviewee #2 reported, “Trinidad gets a bigger share of the pie, [because] half of the testing is for T&T.” A supporting statement comes from Francis et al (2018), who reported that “approximately 40% of specimens received at CARPHA–Trinidad were from Trinidad and Tobago,” which was explained by its close proximity to the Trinidad Public Health Laboratory (TPHL) and CARPHA. This gave T&T a fairer chance of getting technical and laboratory assistance from CARPHA.…”
