Zingiberaceae plants/curcumin consumption and multiple health outcomes: An umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta‐analyses of randomized controlled trials in humans

Abstract: This umbrella review is to recapitulate and grade the available evidence of associations between consumption of Zingiberaceae plants/curcumin (Cur) and multiple health‐related outcomes. This study included 161 meta‐analyses of randomized controlled trials in 76 articles with 67 unique health outcomes. Data on heterogeneity and publication bias are considered to assess the quality of evidence. Based on the different impact of Zingiberaceae plants/Cur on human health, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Z… Show more

“…The remaining 353 articles were thoroughly screened by title and abstract after removing duplicates. Among those, the full text of 15 articles was evaluated and four articles were removed because they were the systematic review regarding the effects of curcumin in NAFLD patients (Farzaei et al, 2018; White & Lee, 2019) and umbrella review (Rolfe et al, 2020; Zhang et al, 2022). Finally, 11 meta‐analyses were included in the present umbrella meta‐analysis.…”

“…In conclusion, the toxicity of high-dose CNC treatment was graded as very low, possibly due to the components of the nanocomplex [311]. Curcumin is generally considered safe and has demonstrated positive effects on multiple health outcomes in humans, with the advantages outweighing the disadvantages [312]. Combining curcumin with other dietary supplements, including piperine, α-lipoic acid, N-acetylcysteine, B vitamins, vitamin C, and folate, has been suggested to have a synergistic effect on cognitive function [313].…”

“…Health-related outcomes were extracted as descriptive summaries for every meta-analysis ( Crichton et al, 2022 ; Zhang et al, 2022 )). Estimated pooled effects—mean difference (MD), standardized mean difference (SMD), risk ratio (RR), and odds ratio (OR)—were extracted from the eligible meta-analyses, along with p -values and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) obtained using random-effects or fixed-effects models.…”

“…In recent years, umbrella review has been a novel approach evaluating the methodological quality and evidence of systematic reviews and meta-analyses ( Aromataris et al, 2015 ). This approach has been implemented across various medical fields, involving psychotherapy ( Leichsenring et al, 2022 ; Rabasco et al, 2022 ), nutritional supplementation ( Fong et al, 2022 ), as well as herbal medicine ( Zhang et al, 2022 ). Nevertheless, to our knowledge, there are no reviews assessing the methodological quality, and summarizing findings of ginseng.…”
