Zn(NH3)CO3: a “three-in-one” UV nonlinear optical crystal built by a polar molecule bonding strategy

Abstract: Centimeter-sized Zn(NH3)CO3 is a “three-in-one” UV nonlinear optical crystal, featuring a Chinese-knot-like framework and great optical performance.

“…[46,47] Nevertheless, successful cases for the development of novel IR NLO materials based on the unique linear and planar NLO units are quite rare due to the experimental challenge. [48,49] With this in mind, grouping the linear, triangular, and tetrahedral units in one compound (named "Three-in-One") could be a feasible way to develop new IR NLO material that is different from traditional chalcopyrite structure constructed by tetrahedral [TQ 4 ] (T = IIIA, VIA, VA elements; Q = S/Se) units. [50,51] Under the guidance of "Three-in-One", based on rigid-flexible units coupled strategy, [39] a wide transparency IR NLO material Hg 7 P 2 Se 12 (HPSe) has been rationally designed and fabricated experimentally.…”

“…These bond distances and angles are in the normal range. 37–39 GdO 8 polyhedra are connected with each other by edge-sharing in the “up down up down” fashion to build 1D Gd–O chains through the c axis. Then, CO 3 triangles are grafted into the Gd–O chains by bidentate chelation and monodentate chelation to generate 1D [Gd(CO 3 ) 2 ] − chains through the c axis (Fig.…”

“…Distortions may enhance anisotropy and birefringence from CaCO 3 to KTb(CO 3 ) 2 , as previously reported. 15,32,33 Besides, distortion is favorable to a number of other optical properties as well such as nonlinear optical properties 38,60 and photoluminescence properties. 61,62…”

“…Alkali-earth-metal, alkali-metal, and metal cations, including Sc 3+ , Y 3+ , and Zn 2+ , as well as halogen anions (F – , Cl – , and Br – ) are commonly the primary choices to design DUV crystals. Up to now, the vast majority of DUV NLO crystals resulted from the combination of the above ions with π-conjugated or non-π-conjugated units. However, compounds that just contain the above metal cations and halogen anions have rarely been reported as DUV NLO crystals.…”
