Zonal plant communities of the Ribesalbes-Alcora Basin (La Rinconada mine, eastern Spain) during the early Miocene

Abstract: A study of the late early Miocene (Ramblian?–lower Aragonian) phytocoenosis of the La Rinconada mine (Ribesalbes‐Alcora Basin, Province of Castellón, eastern Spain) led to the identification of 19 plant species showing mainly xeromorphic and/or sclerophyllous characteristics (three conifers and 16 dicotyledonous angiosperms). These plants mainly reflect the zonal vegetation that developed beyond the influence of the palaeolake known to have existed in the area. This vegetation was characterized by the presence… Show more

“…From Spain, the macrofloras of La Rinconada (Ribesalbes, Castellón) and Mora de Rubielos (Teruel) have been described by Barrón and Postigo-Mijarra (2011), Posti goMijarra and Barrón (2013), and Barrón and Diéguez (2001). The Chattian/Aquitanian flora of Armissan (Aude, southern France) described by Saporta (1865) has never been revised.…”

“…The estimated age for the Ribesalbes sequence was fi rst Oligocene (Hernández Sampelayo & Cincúnegui, 1926;Fernández Marrón & Álvarez Ramis, 1967), but later Fernández Marrón (1971 noted that the plant remains from La Rinconada better correspond to the early Miocene. New palaeobotanical and mammalian data support an early Miocene age for the fossiliferous levels in the basin (Ruiz-Sánchez et al, 2010;Postigo-Mijarra & Barrón, 2013). The mammalian fossils from the unit C have been placed on the biozone MN4 (Agustí et al, 1988;Crespo et al, 2019).…”

“…In recent times, the exceptional preservation of salamander musculature from La Rinconada due to the action of microbial mats and the chemical conditions of burial was analysed by McNamara et al (2010). Later, several palaeoecological inferences based on the plant remains from this locality were published (Barrón & Postigo-Mijarra, 2011;Postigo-Mijarra & Barrón, 2013).…”

“…Although in the fossil sample only some external features are present, such as lateral longitudinal ridges and wing with the straight dorsal side and convex on the ventral side, these are the usual features found in the seeds of Pinus in the Cenozoic flora of the Iberian Peninsula (e.g. Hernández-Sampelayo and Cincúnegui 1926;Roiron et al 1999; Barrón and Diéguez 2001;Postigo-Mijarra and Barrón 2013). Laminar size microphyll to notophyll, with L:W ratio 2:1 to 3.5:1.…”

“…However, the external appearance of the leaf is typical of that of Pinus in the existing literature on the Cenozoic flora of the Iberian Peninsula (e.g. Hernández-Sampelayo and Cincúnegui 1926; Roiron et al 1999;Barrón and Diéguez 2001;Postigo-Mijarra and Barrón 2013). Mai (1998) proposes the use of a species aggregate -Pinus hepios (Unger) Heer, 1855 -for two-needled pines with a short sheath, Oligocene/Early Pliocene in age.…”
