Background: Mistletoe is often used as a complementary approach in oncology. Despite experimental anti-tumour effects and several reviews there remains controversy about its clinical role. Patients and Methods: Potentially relevant trials were identified to perform a systematic review (databases: e.g. EMBASE, MEDLINE; hand search: e.g. bibliographies; search terms: e.g. mistletoe). To be included, randomised or comparative clinical trials at least had to examine mistletoe preparations standardized according to manufacturing process and to describe interventions explicitly. Additionally, cohort studies were included for reasons of external validity. Results were summarised in tables. Results: 18 clinical trials (>6,800 participants) were included. Their internal quality was mostly low. Due to heterogeneity between trials a meta-analysis was impossible. Regarding efficacy, findings were inconsistent regarding life expectancy, relation to tumour entity, dosing and treatment duration. Yet, studies indicate that quality of life (QoL) is improved. As these findings do not seem to be limited to one of the different parenteral mistletoe preparations reviewed the treatment may be summarised under the umbrella term ‘mistletoe therapy’. Regarding safety, 1 serious adverse event (AE) related to mistletoe was described; non-serious AEs were local reactions at injection site. Allergic reactions were rare. Conclusion: Supportive ‘mistletoe therapy’ seems safe and beneficial for QoL in adult patients with solid tumours. But there is an urgent need to confirm its efficacy in patient-centred care in a complex oncological setting. This has to be evaluated systematically in prospective observational trials with validated, multidimensional patient-rated QoL questionnaires and comparisons of different preparations and dosages.

Background: Herbal medicine are patronized by several people across the globe This herbal medicine is routinely use and are more accessible and available. This study aimed to investigate the effects of Englerina drummondii Balle ex Polhill and Wiens leaves on rat organs (thyroid gland, kidneys, ovary and fallopian tubes) weights in female rats. Methods: 20 female rats were selected randomly into 4 groups with 5 rats per group. Group 1 received 5 ml/kg of water, group 2 received extract 100 mg/kg, group 3 received extract 200 mg/kg, and group 4 received extract 400 mg/kg. Administration of extract was done for 28 days. Results: The study revealed significance decreased in the weight of the left ovary organ when extract of medium dose (200 mg/kg) and high dose (400 mg/kg) was administered, as compared to control. The result also shows decrease in the organs weight of the thyroid gland, left kidney, right and left fallopian tubes extract of low, medium and high dose were administered. The right kidney shows increase when low dose extract was given but decrease when both low and medium dose of extract was given. However, this decrease is not significance and could be due to dose or time dependent. Statistical analysis was done using statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS) version 23 and p<0.05 was significant. Conclusions: There was significance decreased in the weight of the left ovary organ when extract of medium dose (200 mg/kg) and high dose (400 mg/kg) was administered. Also, there is decrease in other organs weight when low, medium and high dose was given but not significance.

A simple, specific, and sensitive ultra high performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry method was developed and validated for the simultaneous quantification of nine compounds including a new compound, rhamnazin-3-Ο-β-D-(6″-β-hydroxy-β-methyglutaryl)-β-D-glucoside-4'-Ο-β-D-glucoside, in rat plasma using baicalin as an internal standard. The plasma samples were pretreated and extracted by protein precipitation with 0.2% formic acid in acetonitrile. The analytes were separated on a Thermo Syncronis C18 column by gradient elution with a mobile phase consisting of acetonitrile and 0.1% aqueous formic acid at a flow rate of 0.25 mL/min. The detection of the analytes was performed on an electrospray ionization interface operating in positive-ion and multiple reaction monitoring acquisition modes. The calibration curves of these analytes showed good linearity (r > 0.99) within the test ranges. The lower limit of quantification ranged from 0.4 to 20.1 ng/mL for the analytes. The intra- and interday precision and accuracy were all within ±15%, and the recoveries were higher than 80.0%. The validated method was successfully applied to a pharmacokinetic study of the nine flavonoids after administration of the Viscum coloratum extracts by intravenous injection.
